Fundraiser by Barry Mears

in memory of Mr. William Smith "Smitty" Dize, Jr.

November 1, 2025

Being a neighbor, I've known Barry since I was a child.

He's a man of faith, a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a friend, an author, and an all around good guy.

Upon the passing of Smitty, Barry contemplated how to honor the loss of his friend.

Since Smitty loved his dog and had a soft spot in his heart for animals, Barry concluded that the best way to honor Smitty would be to organize a fundraiser in Smitty's memory to benefit Friends of Animal Control Eastern Shore (FACES).

Barry often organizes cake auctions to help fellow Shore neighbors experiencing difficulties.

These are not just cake auctions; these auctions raise thousands of dollars and truly make a difference.

I'm sure that his family can attest to just how much time and effort he puts into these fundraisers.

That's just the kind of man he is.

Barry presented FACES with a check in the amount of $5,280, along with a plaque to be hung at the Eastern Shore Animal Control facility.

To Tammi, we extend our deepest sympathy for the loss of her beloved Smitty.

Thank you Barry and all those who contributed to this cause!!!

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a living time capsule that has withstood the true test of the ages.

The misty haze of a morning sky marks the dawn of a new day in the life of a Shoreborn soul.

The seagulls are up with the sun, and work boats chug out the creek in the pre-dawn sky.

There is only one thing on a waterman's mind: making a living and doing their family proud.

Author Barry Mears shares touching stories of friendship and the power of community, as well as navigating the changing social and economic landscape.

Through vivid storytelling and personal reflection,
